Sidmouth Attractions and Things To DoThe EsplanadeThis mile long waterfront walkway is lined with fine Georgian houses and offers fantastic views. Historic BuildingsThe legacy of the town’s heyday as an upmarket holiday resort is the impressive selection of Georgian and Victorian buildings which are on show today. The scene of the Duke of Kent’s death, now known as the Royal Glen Hotel, has a plaque to commemorate his visit but is far from the only interesting building in town. Simply taking a simple walk around town is a good way to appreciate the wealth of architecture which it holds, with some buildings also having interesting stories about being used by smugglers or as 18th or 19th century inns. BeachesA tourist sitting on a deck chair on the pebbly beach is perhaps the classic image of British coastal tourism and on a fine day it is just as enjoyable now as it was in Queen Victoria’s day. Walking and climbingThe time and effort taken in climbing the 500 feet Peak Hill is rewarded with a spectacular view of the town and the coastal area. Other options are Salcombe Hill and the green rolling hills of Sid Valley. The Byes is a peaceful and pretty park, with trails guiding you along the River Sid. Walking around the town itself is also recommended, as Sidmouth is famed for having many pleasant gardens and friendly shops. Jurassic CoastSidmouth is an ideal starting point to cover the 95 miles of England’s first natural World Heritage Site. The ancient rocks which can be seen here have given scientists the chance to see how the Earth has evolved during millions of years. Of course, you may choose to simply enjoy the lovely views and fresh, sea air on offer here. South West Coast PathA variety of long and short walks are available over the 630 miles of coastal walks which this popular trail offers. Sidmouth MuseumHere you will come across a fine selection of remnants from the history of the town, with the Victorian age particularly well represented. Sidmouth Folk WeekThis popular folk festival, held at the end of August, has been scaled down somewhat in recent years but still continues to attract artists and spectators from far afield and ends in a torchlight procession through town. Sidmouth Town BandSince the 1860s until the present day Sidmouth’s brass band has played concerts every Sunday evening in Connaught Gardens from May through to September. |
